Last month I finally went to New York – a trip I have been wanting to take for years!
Six days flew by and we saw so much it will probably take a couple of posts to share my highlights with you all.
Working in travel, I plan numerous trips for journalists every month and yet with my own trips – I plan nothing! Well, almost nothing. We had flights booked with Flight Centre who at the moment are my go to for flights – always helpful and friendly and they tend to the best value as well.
Then it was on to the fun bit of picking a hotel. Where to sleep in the city that never sleeps? I picked the Affinia Manhattan. I had never heard of it before, neither had my husband but friends who lived in New York confirmed that it did indeed exist! The two main attractions – a fantastic offer and central location on Seventh Avenue (otherwise known as Fashion Avenue) right across the road from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.
It was absolutely perfect for the kind of trip we wanted – a walking tour of New York City. With nothing planned, we took to the streets each day and just walked our way round stopping when we needed a coffee or foot break. In my opinion it’s definitely the best way to explore and get your bearings!
Not only does the Affinia offer a pillow menu – pillow menu! They also have a great service which all guests can use for free called Experience Kits. Although we didn’t use the pillow menu (what they put on the bed as standard was fine for us!) the Experience Kit was great.
Five minutes after dialling ‘0’ there was a knock at the door and a basket of goodies was delivered including an iPod nano (to use as a pedometer) , a box of walking tour cards, an NYC guide book as well as plenty of maps – street maps, bus maps, subway maps, you name it, we had it!
Our room was small but perfectly formed with modern gadgets – you could tell it had recently been completely refurbished. If like us, you just want to use your hotel room a a crash pad but still want it to be uber-comfortable I would definitely recommend it.
More to come on our New York adventure soon! A couple of our instagram pics below:
