The other weekend I was invited to do something I not only thought I would never do, but thought I would never enjoy.
I had a golf lesson…! With the sunniest morning, blue skies and 1,119 hectares of lush green lawns, Jumeirah Golf Estates provided the most civilised of Saturday mornings. There are two golf courses, and the estate plays host of the annual DP World Tour Championship as well as being home to the Middle East’s only European Tour Performance Institute (ETPI) – more about that later!
We rocked up to the Clubhouse not really knowing what to expect and just hoping we didn’t 100% embarrass ourselves with our lack of golfing knowledge. Our instructor for the day was Gareth and despite sharing stories of our previous golf buggy escapades, he still agreed to our one-on-one lesson – brave!
In just 45minutes we knew how to hold a golf club (basic I know…and also, not called ‘the stick’, the answer my friend offered to Gareth’s first question). We tried our hand at putting and learnt about just how much effort goes into maintaining the golf course and just how much training the professionals put in – and how hard they can hit golf balls across the green, pretty impressive!
Back to the ETPI – these rooms were amazing, essentially it’s a performance enhancing facility with state-of the-art tech to help golfers of all levels improve their technique. The ‘studios’ offer everything from heat sensor mats on the floor that allow golfers to make the tiniest adjustments to their stance when hitting the ball to video swing technology (so many screens…even more buttons!)
There are different options for classes from individual to ladies group lessons – I would highly recommend it. Not only was it a really fun morning but we both did actually improve in just a short time. Although you could argue that we couldn’t have got any worse!
We ended our lesson with a little friendly competition before heading into the Flame Tree Restaurant for a delicious lunch of salad and chicken quesadillas – complete with gatecrashing a golfers quiz which was entertaining!
