One of my travel destinations this year was Sri Lanka. Within days of booking I noticed more and more people planning trips or getting back from the sunny Indian Ocean island.
It’s always the way that you’re more aware of somewhere once it’s on your radar but I do think Sri Lanka is getting more and more popular.
The idyllic island has had its fair share of troubles from the 2007 airport bombing (still very recent in the mind of locals we met) to the Tamil Tigers in the north. However if you steer clear of known problem areas and stay at a reputable hotel you’ll be fine.
We opted for the Heritance Ahungalla in a small area called…you guessed it – Ahungalla, nestled on the coast between the tourist hot spot of Bentota and Galle with its famous fort and lighthouse.
Style: Rustic but with all the luxuries that you need
Best bits: The gorgeous infinity pool with views over the Indian Ocean and the friendly staff
Favourite moments: Drinking from coconuts in the pool, endless games of cards, spotting fireflies walking up the long driveway at night and the delicious breakfast waffles
